Apichatpong Weerasethakul is this year's recipient of the Fine Prize from the Fine Foundation, which honors an emerging artist in the annual Carnegie International show. The prize carries a $10,000 cash award.The theme for the 2008 Carnegie International is "Life in Mars", and asks the questions: "Are we alone in the universe? Do aliens exist? Or are we, ourselves, the strangers in our own worlds?"
These are questions that I think Apichatpong can answer with authority.
At the Pittsburgh museum, Apichatpong is showing a four-screen video installation called Unknown Forces. Here is more about it from the Carnegie Museum of Art website:
The four-screen installation Unknown Forces (2007) functions as an indirect account of Thailand's shifting demographics and work practices. Consisting mostly of a static shot of the back of a sun-baked pickup truck as it carries a group of nomadic laborers, it gives voice to a "voiceless" workforce through storytelling, humor, and dance.
