Citizen Juling added to Toronto fest

A documentary on southern Thailand, Citizen Juling, is among the 26 documentaries recently announced for the Toronto International Film Festival.

It joins Midnight Madness closer Chocolate at the fest, and it's expected a third Thai film will be added as well, reports Kong Rithdee in today's Bangkok Post Real Time section (cache).

Kong wrote about Citizen Juling back in June (cache). Directed by artists Ing K and Manit Sriwanichpoom and activist politician Kraisak Choonhavan, the 220-minute film documents the death of Juling Pongkunmul, a young Buddhist woman who went to southern Thailand to teach art, but was abducted and beaten. Left in a coma, she died eight months after the May 2006 attack. It was outrageous.

Citizen Juling has been shown in Australia, but Toronto is being termed as the film's "world premiere".

Given the film's highly political nature, it is unlikely it will ever be approved for public screening in Thailand. Besides, there are other art films from the South being shown on TV.
