Queens of Langkasuka to open Bangkok Int'l
Scratch that about Vicky Cristina Barcelona or whatever opening the Bangkok International Film Festival. [Edit: It is the "soft opening" film on September 23.]
No, according to Hollywood Reporter's Joel Gershon, who attended a festival press conference yesterday at SF World Cinema at CentralWorld, the "official" opener will be Queens of Langkasuka on September 24. This is the red-carpet pomp and circumstance that's befitting a lavishly costumed historical fantasy by one of Thailand's leading directors. Queens, directed by Nonzee Nimibutr, then heads to the Pusan International Film Festival and the Golden Horse Film Festival in Taiwan. It played in Venice last week.
Also announced yesterday afternoon was the closing film, Nanayo, by Japanese director Naomi Kawase.
The guest list was also revealed, with legendary B-movie producer Roger Corman coming to Bangkok, along with Infernal Affairs writer-director Andrew Lau, Children of Men producer Iain Smith and a couple of young Hollywood actresses, Arielle Kebbel and Leslie Bibb, to add some glamour.
Among the panel of jurors for the competition slate will be Singaporean director Eric Khoo and ubiquitious pan-Asian leading man Ananda Everingham.
The Bangkok International Film Festival runs from September 23 to 30.
