By now you should know the drill when it comes to ordering DVD's of high-profile Thai martial-arts movies like Ong-Bak 2 in Hong Kong. Though the initial specs might list English subtitles, if you're betting on the subs being there, there's a good chance you'll lose that bet.
Such has been the case on the DVD's of Tony Jaa's (and Jeeja's) movies in Hong Kong. The distributors are asked to leave the English subs off in anticipation of sales to North American and U.K. outfits.
Update (April 26, 2009): And finally the DVD is available in Hong Kong. But no subtitles. However, it is available with subs in Malaysia.
As far as I'm aware, Ong-Bak 2 does not have distribution in North America -- The Weinstein Company, not digging the period setting of the film -- backed out of the deal. And that was long before Tony's troubles toward the end of the production. But with film-market season upon us, things may change pretty quickly.
By the way, Ong-Bak 2 makes Jason Gray's best-of non-Japanese movies on Midnight Eye's list for 2008, and he says Chocolate was great fun too.
(Thanks Logboy!)
I've been waiting for Ong Bak 2 to come out on DVD. But knowing that this Hong Kong version probably will be no English subs in it, I think that I must wait for some times again for that English friendly subs DVD.
ReplyDelete...i don't know who the UK licensee is, to be honest, but i'd expect a cinema run (short, token gesture) beforehand - i saw the first that way, in an empty multiplex screen - but it does seem to be retitled as "ong bak : the beginning" from the preorder DVD listing that's speculatively being shown somewhere.
ReplyDeletedidn't enjoy it at all. no element of fun whatsoever. takes itself too seriously.
ReplyDeleteHow did you find ong bak 2 on yesasia cause i visited the site and entered/searched and looked for ong bak 2 but yesasia has no listings.
ReplyDeleteso wondering how you found it..
Logboy actually found it. But admittedly, I have trouble searching for stuff on YesAsia too.
ReplyDeleteYesasia needs to sort it self out!!
ReplyDeletehere you go : yesasia > movies & videos > other asia movies & videos > english-subtitles > release date.
ReplyDeletesearch engine is better than it once was, but it's still a nightmare.
