Apichatpong Weerasethakul has been awarded US$75,000 from the Berlin Film Festival's World Cinema Fund for his next Two other projects from Southeast Asia also received funds: $63,000 to Filipino director Raya Martin for Independencia and another $63,000 for Vietnamese director Di Phan Dang's Bi, Don't Be Afraid.
According to Variety, the awards reflect the World Cinema Fund's new focus on Southeast Asia. The fund was started in 2004, and spread its largess to filmmakers from Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and Central Asia. Last year, Southeast Asia and the Caucasus came under the fund's purview.
