The world premiere of Man and Gravity, a 10-minute short by Jakrawal Nilthamrong is among the titles announced today for the VPRO Tiger Awards Competition at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.
Jakrawal's previous works include Dripping (2004), Enemy (2005), Patterns of Transcendence (2006), A Voyage of Foreteller (2007) and Parallel Journey (2007). He holds a master's of fine arts degree in art and technology studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In 2007 he was an artist in residence at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. His A Voyage of Foreteller was featured at last year's Rotterdam fest.
Also in competition will be - get this - a short film by Lav Diaz. It's called Purgatorio and it'll be the international premiere. And it's only 16 minutes - not hours - long.
In all, there are 27 shorts in competition for three prizes worth 3,000 euros each.
For features, there will be the European premiere of Blind Pig Who Wants to Fly (Babi buta yang ingin terbang) by Edwin. It's the first time an Indonesian film has been featured in competition at Rotterdam.
There are lots more Thai films set for Rotterdam. ThaiIndie and Filmsick have listed them (as have Thunska and Nawapol). This includes a full list of titles for the very exciting Hungry Ghosts horror show. The full program at Rotterdam will be announced on January 15, so I'll wait until then to detail it here.
