Love of Siam, Ploy, Opapatika get Asian Film Awards nods

Nominations for the second annual Asian Film Awards have been announced, and topping the list of nominees from Thailand are two young actors: Mario Maurer, who has received a best supporting actor nod for The Love of Siam, and Apinya Sakujaroensuk, who played the Afro-haired title character in Ploy, as best supporting actress.

Hmm, now I know there are Love of Siam fans out there who are saying, "Supporting actor?! Mario is the star!" And, hey, maybe he could stand up against the likes of Tony Leung and Jet Li. (Reminder for Bangkok readers: The four-hour director's cut of The Love of Siam is playing until Wednesday at House on RCA.)

Pen-ek Ratanaruang's Ploy received a second nod for best cinematography, for Chankit Chamnivikaipong.

The Love of Siam, unsurprisingly, is also nominated for best composer, with the The August Band, Flure, Witwisit "Mew" Hirunwongkul, director Chukiat Sakweerakul and Passakorn Wiroonsup named as co-nominees.

The dark karmic action thriller, Opapatika, is nominated for best production design (Pisut Pariwattanakit and Thanakorn Pornsuwan).

Top nominees are Ang Lee's Lust, Caution and Peter Chan's The Warlords, each with six nominations, including the top categories of Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress.
