Teen star Apinya Sakuljaroensuk, who played the Afro-haired title character in Pen-ek Ratanaruang's Ploy has been cast in a new installment of the Boonchoo series of comedy films.
With this year being the 20th anniversary of the series, Boonchoo 9 will also mark the return to the director's chair of
Bhandit Rittakol, who directed the early episodes in the 1980s and '90s. Bhandit has had health problems lately and hasn’t been as active as he'd like, though he did direct a short for last year's Short Films Project in Commemoration of the Celebration on the Auspicious Occasion of His Majesty the King's 80th Birthday Anniversary.
In Boonchoo, Santisuk Phromsiri played the title role, with Jintara Sukapat as his girl, Mo.
Five Star Production has had pretty good luck with resurrecting its old series. In 2005 it offered a 30-years-later look at the teen couple from Piak Poster's Wai Ounlawon series of the 1970s with Wai Onlawon: Tum+Oh Return, or Oops, There's Dad, which did pretty well at the box office and gained notice during film-awards season.
Both Apinya and Jintara have also been mentioned as taking part in a Nonzee Nimibutr Japanese co-production, Just as Chao Phraya River Flows.
