Bangkok animation team hits jackpot at SIGGRAPH

With a comic short about a man playing a casino's slot machines, a trio from Bangkok called Team Prestissimo won first place in the FJORG! animation contest at SIGGRAPH 2009.

The annual graphics conference was held in New Orleans from August 4 to 8.

Hailing from The Monk Studio in Bangkok, Team Prestissimo comprises Sasapitt Rujirat, 33, Lee Croudy, 34, and Phon Thiramonkol, 24.

Teams chosen to compete in FJORG! get 32 hours to create their short on a specific theme and incorporating various pre-determined elements. A story in The Nation today has more details:

We received The Great Expectation as a competition theme and a sound file of a 1920s phone dialing, with a busy signal. We had to develop an animated piece of 15 to 45 seconds by using this material. That was very challenging for us," Sasapitt said.

Most of the team's resources and time were spent deciding on the how their piece would tell a story. They began by brainstorming their story line while other competitors began by creating their animated characters.

"Our piece, called The Great Expectation, told in 45 seconds the story about the great expectations of most people when playing a slot machine," he said.

The clip is on YouTube and I've embedded it below. Enjoy!
