Galileo couldn't top Harry
Dear Galileo debuted at No. 2 at the Thai box office, earning US$388,562 (around 13.2 million baht) when it was released on July 23, according to the latest Box Office Mojo chart.
Holding firm in the top spot was Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which was No. 1 for the second consecutive week, and dominating on 192 screens compared to Galileo's 122.
While Dear Galileo, a light comedy-drama about two Thai women traveling in Europe, couldn't top Harry, they did gun down the Johnny Depp gangster movie, which was the other major new release that week. Director Michael Mann's Public Enemies was in third place.
How will Dear Galileo fare in the coming weeks, against the likes of Bruno, The Hangover and Work Point Entertainment's Thai horror 6:66 Tai Mai Dai Tai (Death Happens), which opened July 30, or the teenage-drug drama of Thanit Jitnukul's Samchuk and militaristic ridiculousness of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, which sneaked into cinemas yesterday? All will probably be swept away by Jija: Du Suay Dua (Raging Phoenix), which leads a big slate of releases on August 12, Her Majesty the Queen's birthday and Mother's Day in Thailand.
