Images from Iron Pussy: A Kimchi Affair

You might not have believed it when you heard or read that Tears of the Black Tiger and Citizen Dog director Wisit Sasanatieng was collaborating with Iron Pussy performance artist Michael Shaowanasai on an Iron Pussy short in Busan.

Well, here's the proof. It's real. And it's almost done, if not in the can. Twitch has a gallery of images of Iron Pussy: A Kimchi Affair. Go on over an take a look.

They make a great team, Iron Pussy and Wisit. She (the former) is heavily influenced by the iconic looks of one of Thailand's greatest movie actresses, Petchara Chaowarat, while Wisit paid homage to Petchara's 1960s and '70s heyday with Tears of the Black Tiger.

It's one of three segments for a pan-Asian romance anthology for Camellia, a.k.a. the Busan Project for the city of Busan, South Korea, announced at last year's Pusan International Film Festival. In addition to Wisit's and Michael's short, there are segments by South Korea's Jang Joon-hwan (Save the Green Planet) and Japan's Isao Yukisada (Go!).

Iron Pussy, the flamboyantly transvestite crimefighting alter ego of a humble gay male convenience store clerk, was made a cult heroine by 2004's The Adventure of Iron Pussy, which Michael co-directed with Apichatpong Weerasethakul, essentially a director-for-hire who took on the project to keep his film crew busy while awaiting funding to make Tropical Malady. Iron Pussy has actually been featured in a number of short films by Michael, a Bangkok-based performance artist. He'd lately grown bored with played Iron Pussy -- shows you how much of a wild man he is -- but the prospect of working with Wisit, and shooting on location in chilly Busan must have been enough for Iron Pussy to come out of retirement.

Speculation all along has been that the Busan Project will premiere at Cannes Film Festival, which if that turns out to be true, can't come soon enough.

Meanwhile, it's a big year for Wisit, who also has his reboot of Red Eagle -- the famous Mitr Chaibancha and Petchara crimefighting franchise of the 1960s -- due for release later in the year.
